[K3] Cockburn Ranges and Ord Valley Sunset
The breathtaking colours of the Kimberley inspire artists and visitors alike. This short afternoon tour is a visual feast of colour and texture, and an opportunity to capture the essence of the Kimberley on film.
Departing Kununurra we track west towards the Chamberlain and Pentecost Rivers. where we survey the El Questro Township and the cliff perched Homestead can be observed.
Following the Pentecost downstream our senses are awakened by the ancient escarpment of the spectacular Cockburn Ranges, lit to a glorious rich amber in the late afternoon sun.
The famous Gibb River Road Pentecost Crossing is followed by Home Valley Station and the upper reaches of the Cambridge Gulf. The meandering King River and the historic port of Wyndham pass below as we set course for the Lower Ord River and and the wetlands teeming with aquatic birdlife.
We follow the Lower Ord upstream at low level, in search of saltwater crocodiles catching the last of the afternoon sun, and pass by House Roof Hill, the homestead setting for Baz Luhrman’s movie “Australia”.
The lush green and fertile plains of the northern Ord River Irrigation Area welcome us back to Kununurra as the last of the sun’s rays cast long shadows over its patchwork farmlands.
